Drain excavation & replacement

When damaged drains can’t be repaired from within, we’ll find the right way to replace them.

DrainAid provides professional drain excavation and replacement for homes and businesses across Sussex, Surrey and the surrounding areas.

Where pipework is severely damaged, collapsed or unsuitable for a no-dig repair, excavation may be needed to access and replace the affected section. We’ll assess the condition of your drains first and only recommend excavation where it’s the appropriate solution.

Has your drain collapsed or become badly damaged?

A collapsed, broken or severely damaged drain can stop wastewater flowing properly and lead to repeated blockages, leaks or wastewater backing up around your property.

When the pipework has lost its structure or become too badly damaged to repair from within, the affected section may need to be accessed below ground and replaced.

DrainAid can investigate the extent and location of the damage and determine whether excavation is necessary. Where it is, we'll explain what needs replacing and the work involved before anything goes ahead.

Signs your drain may need excavating or replacing

It isn’t always possible to tell from above ground how badly a drain is damaged, but some problems can indicate that the pipework needs further investigation:

  • Repeated or severe blockages that continue after the drain has been cleared

  • Wastewater backing up or drains that have stopped flowing properly

  • Leaks or persistent wet areas around the route of underground drainage

  • Ground movement or subsidence around the drainage system

  • Broken, collapsed or badly displaced pipework identified during a CCTV drain survey

  • Previous repairs that have failed or pipework that has significantly deteriorated

These signs don’t automatically mean excavation is necessary. We’ll assess the condition of the drain first and only recommend replacement where another repair method isn’t suitable.

How drain excavation and replacement works

Before any excavation begins, we’ll identify the location and extent of the damage so the work can be planned around the section of drainage that needs attention.

The affected area is carefully excavated to access the damaged pipework. The broken, collapsed or deteriorated section can then be removed and replaced with new drainage pipework.

Once the replacement is complete, the drainage system is checked to make sure everything is working as it should before the excavated area is reinstated.

We’ll explain the work involved before we begin and aim to keep the excavation and disruption to your property to the minimum necessary.

When is excavation the right option?

Excavation is usually considered when the existing pipework is too badly damaged for a no-dig repair to provide an appropriate solution.

This may include drains that have completely collapsed, severely broken or displaced pipework, or sections that have deteriorated to the point where they need to be replaced.

Where the drain is still structurally suitable, a less disruptive solution such as drain lining or a patch repair may be possible. We’ll assess the condition of the pipework first and recommend excavation only where it’s genuinely needed.
